In 2005 the Territorial Section for Aragón of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry, the Aragonese Section of the Spanish Royal Society of Physics, the Spanish Royal Society of Mathematics, the official councils of Chemistry, Geology and of Physics in Aragón, the Zaragoza City of Knowledge Foundation, the Royal Academy of Sciences of Zaragoza, the Higher Council of Scientific Research of Aragón and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Zaragoza established the annual José María Savirón Prize for the public understanding of science.
This prize, named after the eminent scientist and exceptional teacher, is awarded to people who, in the opinion of the jury, have provided a meritorious contribution towards bringing science and technology closer to Society.
Potential candidates for the prize can be individuals, groups or organisations that have an outstanding project or established activity in the area of the public dissemination or promotion of science or technology.

The sixth edition awards ceremony for the José María Savirón Prize for the Public Understanding of Science took place in the Sala de Grados of the Faculty of Sciences on Thursday, 1st December 2011.

The jury of the José María Saviron Prize awarded the prize for the category 'Autonomous Community of Aragón' to the Society of Friends of the Palaeontological Museum of the University of Zaragoza in appreciation of its work disseminating and developing its activities, including editing its journal Naturaleza Aragonesa ('Aragonese Nature').
Don Ramon Núñez Centella won the prize in the category 'National sphere' for his professional career - from the chemical industry to teaching, from teaching to pedagogy and from pedagogy to museology.
The special prize of the jury was been awarded to Don Alberto Carrión Sanjuán for his long career in the public dissemination of Science and Technology within the community of Aragón.

The fourth edition awards ceremony for the José María Savirón Prize for the Public Understanding of Science took place in the Sala de Grados of the Faculty of Sciences on Friday, 20th March 2009.
Amongst other authorities, the ceremony was attended by the Rector of the University of Zaragoza, the Counsellor of the Department of Science, Technology and Universities of Aragón and the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences.
During the ceremony the video Following the footprints of primitive life (the Cambrian Period), directed by Eladio Liñan and Miguel Bayón, was projected. At the end of the ceremony the exhibition on Darwinism: Evolution by natural selection was inaugurated.
