Conferencia Extraordinaria: "CERN and the discovery of the Higgs boson: the success story of a European Large Scale Facility". Lunes 21 de octubre

El lunes 21 de octubre de 2013, en la Sala de Grados de la Facultad de Ciencias a las 12:30 horas, tendrá lugar la conferencia Extraordinaria: "CERN and the discovery of the Higgs boson: the success story of a European Large Scale Facility". Será impartida por el Prof. Michel Spiro del National Institute for Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics (IN2P3), France. Abstract. The recent discovery at CERN of the Brout, Englert and Higgs Boson sheds new light on the connection between the infinitely small (the elementary particles), the nature of quantum vacuum, and the infinitely large (the early stages of our observable universe). In this talk,Prof. M Spiro will describe this very long term collective quest coordinated by CERN. Also he will illustrate through CERN the scientific, economic and societal benefits of Large Scale Research Infrastructures. As graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique, Prof. Michel Spiro wrote his PhD thesis in sciences, in Saclay at the CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission) where he started working in 1970. He was promoted to the position of director of the Particle Physics Section of DAPNIA (Astrophysics, Nuclear and Particle Physics Department in CEA) in 1991 and led the section until 1999. He became chargé de mission of the CEA and assistant scientific director in CNRS, responsible for astroparticle physics and neutrinos. He took over the leadership of DAPNIA in 2002. From 2003 to 2010 hewas appointed Director of IN2P3 (National Institute for Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics) in CNRS. Beginning of 2010, he was elected President of CERN Council.
