Alberto Domínguez is a Ramón y Cajal fellow at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) and the Instituto de Física de Partículas y del Cosmos (IPARCOS). His doctoral research was conducted at the Universidad de Sevilla and the University of California Santa Cruz, where he was part of the teams focusing on Galaxy evolution and high-energy physics within the frameworks of the MAGIC and Fermi-LAT collaborations. After holding his PhD, he joined the University of California Riverside as a post-doctoral fellow, where he devoted three years to the study of star-forming galaxies through the analysis of Hubble Space Telescope data. After this postdoctoral stage, he undertook another postdoctoral position at Clemson University in South Carolina, where his research was centered on blazarsand the development of gamma-ray catalogs. Following a Juan de la Cierva fellowship, he returned to the Universidad Complutense de Madrid as a Ramón y Cajal fellow.

Alberto Domínguez is notably recognized for his contributions to the understanding of extragalactic background light and the use of gamma-ray data for cosmological measurements. He will be visiting our department next November 16th and 17th (Edif. de Matemáticas, Office 341, Telf. 84-3284).

Resumen (en inglés):

The light emitted by all galaxies across the history of the Universe is encoded in the intensity of the extragalactic background light (EBL), the diffuse cosmic radiation field at ultraviolet, optical, and infrared wavelengths. The EBL is a source of opacity for very high energy gamma rays via pair production, leaving a characteristic attenuation imprint in the spectra of distant gamma- ray sources. In this seminar, I will report on new measurements of the EBL using gamma-ray data from both the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and ground-based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. These unprecedented measurements have allowed us to derive the cosmic star-formation history, the number density of faint galaxies during the re-ionization epoch, and also the expansion rate of the Universe and its matter content. These results demonstrate that gamma-ray astrophysics has matured to the point of providing competitive measurements of cosmic properties previously restricted to techniques used by more traditional astronomy.
